Our New Images at OLR

A generous parishioner has donated the entire sum to purchase the new images of Our Lady of the Rosary and St Joseph for our church. They will be installed in our present church, and have pride of place above the side altars of our new church when it is built.

The images were first presented to the church family for consideration last January. For months we waited and consulted and asked members for their opinion. Some people were unsure about them, but most people liked them very much, so by the Autumn we were finally able to purchase them.

The new image of the Blessed Virgin is  Our Lady of the Rosary. She is shown crowned as Queen of Heaven offering her son for the redemption of the world, and offering the holy rosary as the means of prayer and union with the mysteries of our salvation. St Joseph is shown with the carpenter's square as a sign of his vocation as the foster father of the Lord.

The statues are hand carved in chestnut wood with gold highlights on the robes. They are carved in the Romanesque style of art. This style, from the early Middle Ages is a transition style from the very stylized icons of the early church and the Eastern part of Christendom to the later, more realistic styles of art in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. The Romanesque style of the statues will reflect the same style of art--with stylized poses and elongated figures which will be seen in the new stained glass windows of our new church.

I hope our whole church family will soon learn to love these beautiful images, and that most of all, we will learn to pray with them. As we honor the Blessed Virgin and St Joseph, let us be inspired by the beauty of these images to draw closer to the Son of God through the prayers of his Blessed Mother and his earthly father St Joseph.

February 22 - 40 Days for Life
You are invited to join other Christians throughout the Upstate to take part in our Lenten 40 Days for Life event beginning February 22nd (Ash Wednesday) and ending April 1st. 40 Days for Life is a grass roots pro-life campaign with a vision to access God's Power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion. The mission is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God's favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion. To find out more and to sign up to help, contact Ingrid Ireland at 864 -329-0044 or Victoria Norris at 864-967-2713 or by visiting: www.40daysforlife.com/greenville. The 40 Days for Life campaigns have produced many miracles such as over 5000 babies saved, 61 abortion workers left their jobs, and 20 abortion facilities closed their doors forever!

March 23 & 24 - Family Honor Program

The purpose of the Family Honor Changes & Challenges Program is to explore God’s special gift of human fertility in light of the virtue of chastity with the beauty and wonder of growing up and becoming a Christian teen by providing opportunities for parents and children to learn to communicate effectively on important life values, with a special focus on the truth and goodness of human sexuality and the virtue of chastity. The program is grounded (in an age-appropriate way) in the philosophy articulated via Pope John Paul II. Family Honor programs are fun and informative, but most importantly, they are designed to help enhance parent-child connection and communication. Thus you, the parent(s) or adult guardian(s) are required to attend this program with your child if you register your child for the program. Click here for more details.
